A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Start with a real problem

Start with a direction, not a perfect job title. Note the kinds of problems you want to work on, environments you prefer and responsibilities you are curious about. Review a handful of real job descriptions to identify recurring skills and requirements in your target area.

Understand the landscape

Choose one or two gaps to work on first. Set a time-bound learning goal and make the practice visible: a spreadsheet analysis, a small website, a writing sample or a documented project can demonstrate what you can do. Ask someone knowledgeable for feedback and improve the work.

Run a small, honest test

Review the plan every few weeks. Track applications, conversations, practice and feedback, not only outcomes outside your control. Adjust your direction when new evidence appears. A plan can support preparation, but hiring decisions depend on many factors and no course or plan guarantees a job.
